My guess is the white one has to be thicker to alleviate the light leakage issue that was rumored/reported. Still sneaky of Apple to advertise it as the same thickness as the black one...

    Exciting to hear.

Hopefully they've entered a period of sustained growth, one that can carry them far into the future.

... though will they ever break through that 5% glass ceiling?
Given that they're at 4.7% (averaged), I'll guess they'll cross 5% within the next calendar year. (Though I suspect it may happen before MWSF)

1,610,000 Macs and 8,729,000 iPods were shipped this quarter representing a 30 percent growth in Macs and 35 percent growth in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

As always, the iPod is Apple's real cash cow.

Too bad for those of us who wish they would divert a little more of their attention to their computer line.

An interesting read in response to the kernel panic ability of the .DMG vulnerability:

    http://alastairs-place.net/2006/11/dmg-vulnerability/

A very insteresting read.. most of which I only barely grasp. Object oriented programming just makes my eyes glaze thinking about it.. The gist:

i don't understand why everyone is ignoring this guys' post. i'm not a computer engineer, so can someone with the right knowledge explain this a bit more? is it really adware or just a bug? :)

Amazon is poised to pwn both Apple and Google on that one.

If MobileMe is any indication, Apple just doesn't get cloud - if they plan on charging for it, Amazon is happy to take their business - they'll sell you plain mp3s for the boot!

Android wins (http://www.androidcentral.com/nielsen-android-americas-most-wanted-platform) in any case!

Less Bars is a group of consumers who rave about one of the greatest inventions of this century: the iPhone. We are also an *educated* group of consumers who recognize that AT&T is currently conducting billing abuses against the majority of iPhone 3G customers.

We created this petition to tell the AT&T Fat Cat Executives We will not stand for your billing abuses. It is our constitutional right to use any and all social media and public relations avenues available to help spread the word about your billing abuse practices. We will not give up until you announce you will credit our accounts for each and every dropped call.

Exactly! He is doing what he wants. Why does he have to do what other people want?

Also, the more we talk about him, the more he wins. If people continue to talk about him, he will just keep winning. There really is not anything else to discuss, but the media seems to enjoy rehashing his choices for some reason.

    Congrats on the win, Charlie.

    Children removed form his custody.
Fired from #1 sitcom on TV.
Going on the Internet and melting down nightly.

    Winning, indeed.

I think it's best if Vista is avoided altogether. The best way to avoid problems with Microsoft is not to give them any money and not to load any of their software on your computer.

At work here we just discovered that upgrading to Internet Exploder 7 causes two of our most important Internet based products to not work properly. They ever heard about backwards compatibility or testing at Microsoft? Just reinforces my reasoning for not sending Microsoft almost $300 to subject myself to their newest software fiasco. I think I'll do something more rewarding and pleasurable like jab a Bic pen into the palm of my hand.

I get why you are mad that IE 7 broke your product but I think one of microsofts biggest problems is that they have to continually think about the backwards compatability. If they don't there customers get mad but they are also mad when nothing new happens with the OS. I am not saying that there is nothing new in Vista but when they have to consider ALL the software and hardware they have to support from "legacy" system it can be overwhelming.

I think that if microsfot keeps up this trend of a new OS every 4 years (or whatever the time frame has been for Vista) they should make baselines and then tell everyone that software is going to have to be tweaked and changed for the next version of the OS.

Kinda like apple switching to intel. Apple told it customers and then helped the transition buy providing a tool to make universal binaries. For the most part i think Apple did a good job with the transition and everything went pretty smooth. Microsoft needs to take a similar approach with its next OS version.

But that is just my opinion.

I'd wager that the photo is probably fake, but the info sounds real. It makes sense that M$ would cash in on their successful XBox name. The problem with Origami is that they had other people do it and that the Windows name doesn't hold much clout nowadays. You would think that Microsoft would actually put some of their R&D team on Vista so they can release it within a decade of XP instead of coming up with all these other hair-brained ways to waste their money.

Nice metric you have there, $some people on the internet have said it, thus it must be true.

I know right? We all know that everything that is said on the internet is inherently fact

He was talking about seeing blue screens. So it doesn't matter how many people would register it as a crash....they still wouldn't see a blue screen. That was the point he was trying to make.

Yep. I got that; I was saying that the reason you don't see it is not because they've hidden it; it's because XP is actually a lot more stable. Crashes these days are pretty rare, and are usually caused by attempts to access strange areas of memory, or driver problems. I have an XP box running a couple of web containers, and a few app servers; aside from a driver hiccup, never had a crash or secret reboot (and I would know, because I would still need to log back in when I got back from the water cooler).

Also, just as a side note...it took them three years to create the version you're talking about. I'm not stating this for argument—it's only here as additional info.

... and it took Apple just as long to create a stable version of OSX; the only real difference was that MS didn't charge for the interim versions. Again, just additional info.

Mr Blah, your name seems to be appropriate. No one looks at a tower and says, "Hey, that looks like a really innovative computer." However, how many people think that (maybe not in those exact words, but the idea) about the iMac? I'd venture to guess a lot more than ever thought that about a Dell. That's why Apple's viewed as the leader in the computer industry even by a lot of people who don't have or even want Macs. If Apple sacrificed that for the sake of perceived benefit on the part of the same people that go for Dells because they're "tools", they're not going to gain anything. Apple survives and flourishes by being the technology leaders, not by copying overused designs like towers.

It turns out the iPod already has some tough competition in the form of the Toshiba Gigabeat S, the Creative Zen M: and V/V plus and the Samsung YP-Z5 seeing how they have so far beaten the iPod in head to head battle on cnet and that site tends to be a little bias towards the ipod specially editor James Kim.

Ok, this thread is getting weird. Seriously, the BBW fetish thing grosses me out.
    ...
That moon girl has nothing about her face that's cute.

It's okay to have that opinion; I'm not asking anyone to agree with me. Admittedly, the freckles do nothing for me either.

My preference may be somewhat marginal, but it's a preference nonetheless. Now, if I got aroused by a vat of Crisco, that would be a fetish.

The feederism thing is definitely a fetish, and that turns me off too. Someone sent me a Jerry Springer clip of a BBW in a wading pool filled with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. It didn't excite me in the least. All I could think was, "Why did she allow herself to stoop that low?"

    What is "FA"?

In this lady's case it is not just fat, she has an actual goal to make it to total immobility. FFS, I'm huge but I walk and can even jog quite a distance just fine.

FA stands for Fat Admirer. It's a euphemism for a man who prefers fat women as romantic partners. We used to be called "chubby chasers", but that phrase has been adopted by the gay community to refer to gay men who like large men.

As I stated above, this woman doesn't really want to get to the point of immobility, as she stated in a later interview; the "goal" was more or less just a fantasy she had expressed, mostly for the benefit of her FA fans and site subscribers. The whole thing was little more than a bit of self-publicity.

Not if you tie the iPod to iChat. "Videoconferencing, on the go".

I see where you are getting at but who would want to use an ipod for video conferencing when the business user which it is aimed at rather use a phone like the Razr V3x, a pda or that new 4.5in Sony tablet pc.
