I think we should try to keep the software listed here just to whats flat-out free. Perhaps if someone wants, we can start a second thread to the tune of Not Exactly Free, But Worth It! Software. As a general rule, any software with a trial period isnt free, so we should probably keep it out of this thread in order to keep with the threads theme. (And BTW this isnt directed at anyone in particular.)

So lets keep it up, guys! What other free software you do like? :)

I've been thinking about that: remember when there were rumors of OS X delays because the Mac team was pulled onto the iOS team in order to get 3.0 out? I'm wondering if the opposite is happening now - the iOS team has been pulled onto the Lion team in order to get Lion ready for a summer launch.

    This begs another question.

I know Apple likes to have very agile teams that can be pulled into whichever project needs the most attention at the time, but if OS X is taking a hit because of iOS, iOS is taking a hit because of OS X, iWork hasnt been refreshed, let alone iWork for iOS, etc, etc, it sounds like Apple just needs more engineers.

Has anyone had a close look at the main picture on Apple's preview page? The sender of the email in the top pane is 'Katie Lorenzo' but in the preview pane her name is 'Amy Lorenzo'. Also, the delivery time is out by almost an hour.

    Comments?

obviously, Katie's sister Amy took the honeymoon picture.

    :)

i, too, am firmly in the "Notes Haters" camp.

I know that I will get the usual canned response here from Notes fans ("but, you see, it is not just an email app, it is so much more...").

Yeah, they're probably the worst fanboys in the IT industry; "But it can do so much!" yes well if it can do so much, why is it the crashtastic pile of shite that it is today? If it crashes on you, you have to reboot the PC, cos just trying to start Lotus Notes again will give you a cryptic error message.

The user interface is the worst ever ("click that little unmarked rectangle top-left in the mail view to check for new mail!", and, oh, about 10'000 other possible examples of UI idiocy).

The last two jobs I've held have forced me to use this decades-past-it's-heyday trainwreck, and even though I've used it in various incarnations (~R4-R6 and whatever the latest public version is), I would love to know what the people at IBM were and still are smoking. Shouldn't you fix glaringly obvious bugs, from release to release? Do they even employ UI designers at IBM? Do they actually consider things such as optimizing performance, when rolling out a new release?

As far as I can see, the sole reason it still exists, apart from the fact that you can send and receive emails and do scheduling with it (which are the two things most companies use it for today), seems to stem from the veritable ARMIES of consultants and developers that keep on recommending it, ostensibly to protect their own incomes after having spent thousands learning how to develop applications for it.

But what if torturing a person who is involved in the plans of a terrorist attack could prevent thousands of deaths?

Torturing would never be a good action, but it is like killing someone to defend yourself, killing is bad, but the result of killing saved your life.

In the case of torture, it is the government defending its people (country). If it can be avoided better, but I would rather authorize torture instead of letting attacks happen.

EDIT: As with everything, every single case needs to be analyzed separately.

The type of country which is willing to torture people will always inspire more violence against them. You might save 100 lives today and lose 10,000 lives the next year because of that behavior.

The ends don't justify the means torture is wrong period.

Would you support forcible medical testing on people if that forcible testing might save hundreds of thousands of lives in the future?

    Bertrand Serlet (Apple)
Apple today announced (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2011/03/23serlet.html) that Bertrand Serlet, senior vice president of Mac Software Engineering, will be departing the company in order to "focus less on products and more on science", although his specific destination remains unknown. Serlet joined Steve Jobs at NeXT in 1989, and transitioned to Apple in 1997 when NeXT was acquired and Jobs brought back to lead Apple.

Craig Federighi demoing Mac OS X Lion (Reuters)
Serlet will be replaced by Craig Federighi, currently Apple's vice president of Mac Software Engineering and who has led Mac OS X engineering for the past two years. Federighi is another former NeXT and Apple employee who spent ten years at Ariba before returning to Apple in 2009. Serlet notes that the transition should be seamless given Federighi's role in leading the current Mac OS X team.Serlet has occasionally appeared at Apple keynote and media events over the years to introduce Mac OS X-related features, and thus well known to longtime Apple followers. Federighi made his first public presentation since his return to Apple at last October's "Back to the Mac" event (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/10/20/live-coverage-of-apples-back-to-the-mac-media-event/), taking the stage to show off some of the features of Apple's forthcoming Mac OS X Lion.

I just got a 2.8 i7 Quad Core iMac, and I wouldn't mind helping out if someone would outline the steps for me. I already installed seti@home, but the application is only using one core, which really bugs me. I wont be able to dedicate my machine 24/7, but on the down time, or when I leave the room I wouldn't mind leaving it on.

thanks! your iMac should fold nicely. start here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=21908) at our own folding FAQ.

basically, there are 2 types of folding clients: a console (terminal) and one that runs in system preferences. most people here run the console client, mainly b/c you have more control.

are you familiar with running things in terminal? if so, all you do is download the client, extract it, move into that folder, and start the script with some options. here would be an example for you:

fah -smp 8 -advmethods -verbosity 9 -local

and you can stop that when you want by typing control+c.

please let us know if you have any other questions

It's time to look into ALL OS's, mobile and stationary, to see how much data is collected. Not just apple. Let's see how wide spread this really is. I don't use a iPhone, but do own a EVO. At least under android, your told what app has access to before downloading. Since I'm using an iPad, 1st gen, am presuming it's the same as the iPhone for getting apps, doesn't state what a program has access to. Would be a nice feature.

Any chance for adding this. I'm guessing it hasnt been added due to some interference with advertising, bbut it allows sharing images etc from a mobile device and frankly is a better experience browsing on iOS than mobile safari and the similar.

    A response would be appreciated.

I think Apple waited too long to bring the iPhone to Verizon. By the time they did many diehard Verizon customers had just bought Android alternatives. I think Apple got a little too sucked in by the exclusive money from AT&T, but in the end it might end up hurting them.

Now Apple is going to have to fight to get those customers in the coming year or two, all the while Android is getting better and better.

I'm an iPhone 4 customer on AT&T, but I'm still able to see the big picture. They should have had the iPhone on Verizon a year earlier.
